An excellent and unique book set in Canada and written by a Canadian author I loved the writing blunt, straightforward, and perfectly suited to the storyline and the characters Empire of Wild has a thriller like feel, grounded in M tis folklore I have never read anything quite like this and couldn t put it down.

I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads Giveaway program in exchange for an honest review I was so excited to win a book by Cherie Dimaline because I listened to 2018 s CBC Canada Reads and was intrigued by the plot of her nominated book The Marrow Thieves still on my to read list Empire of Wild absolutely did not disappoint and drew upon important Indigenous issues in Canada it was great to see so many Ontario references throughout the book some of the places I m actually quite familiar with.I found the plot captivating from the beginning, and was fascinated by the concept of the rogarou within Indigenous folklore Dimaline s writing style is at times very blunt which can make for an uncomfortable read, however it was absolutely necessary for Joan s character to have a rough around the edges, matter of fact attitude as depicted in Dimaline s style Overall great read and can t wait to check out Cherie s other works

This might not need hype, but in case it does this is essentially a twist on traditional CanLit in terms of setting and characters, and the story is an Indigenous werewolf story It s not as allegorical as the Marrow Thieves, but the plotline centres around a white man trying to use religious manipulation to game Indigenous communities into giving up land rights for oil business I loved it, but the ending wasn t as satisfying as I wanted it to be.

I have won this book through the Goodreads Giveaways This is not my typical genre of books that I read, however I will be looking for titles like this one I loved the writing style of Cherie Dimaline, it is was blunt at times but fit the story line perfectly I loved that it is from a Canadian Author with a lot of mention to different places in Canada I am not the best with writing reviews but if this book is something you are considering then I highly recommend just picking it up and reading it as I am sure you will not be disappointed.
